What Are The Causes Of Generalized Weakness

Many people face the issue of constant weakness throughout the body and have a feeling of lethargy. It is mostly seen in seniors, but, at times, even younger people also complain about the same issue.

Medically, it is known as a generalized weakness. It is a condition that is also the toughest to diagnose. Usually, we see a link of weakness with some other medical conditions such as low blood pressure and fatigue. It can also be because of endocrine problems.

According to medical reports, several conditions have been identified which are associated with acute weakness, which is seen in the emergency room.

To know which are the most common causes of generalized weakness, have a look at the list that is given below.

Anemia

The issue of anemia occurs in the person when his or her hemoglobin level recedes, mainly due to iron deficiency. The red blood cell count often drops due to the problem, and the person appears pale all the time.

The symptoms that indicate anemia are headache, dizziness, irregular heartbeat, shortness of breath, and cold hands and feet. Anemia is one of the reasons why you may feel weak all the time.

Hypoglycemia

Hypoglycemia or low blood sugar count occurs in diabetic people when the blood sugar level reaches a dangerously low level. Hypoglycemia is quite common in diabetic people who have a fluctuating blood sugar level issue.

It causes extreme weakness and fatigue in the patient, and if untreated, it may cause even death.

Chronic fatigue syndrome

It is a diagnosis made for unexplained fatigue or some fatigue that a doctor is unable to diagnose related to some medical condition. Chronic fatigue is also known by the name of myalgic encephalomyelitis.

People having this issue often complain of extreme tiredness and sleep issues. The other symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome include dizziness, muscle weakness, and problems in concentrating.

Fibromyalgia

It is a chronic issue that leads to muscle pain and weakness. There are other symptoms of this problem as well, such as mood swings, constant fatigue, and memory problems.

Electrolyte disorders or imbalances

Electrolytes in the body enable the proper functioning of the muscles, heart, nerves, and brain. If there is an imbalance or altered level of electrolytes such as calcium, sodium, potassium, and magnesium can result in weakness.

Some of the instances of electrolyte disorders include hypokalemia or hyperkalemic periodic paralysis. The causes of such imbalance are loss of fluids due to diarrhea, vomiting and sweating, poor diet, and antibiotics.

Kidney disease

If you feel weak and sluggish all the time, it may be due to kidney malfunction or disease.

If the kidney does not function properly, it may result in metabolic waste products, like creatinine, to build up in the muscles. This build-up can lead to twitching and weakness in the body.

Sleep disorders

People who are suffering from sleep disorders like insomnia and narcolepsy can experience daytime weakness and fatigue.

A person who has to lie on the bed for some medical condition for a prolonged time can also experience muscle weakness.

Modafinil can help you to control the narcolepsy symptoms as modafinil promotes wakefulness.
